The Joy of Clans...
This article is
for the benefit of all the hundreds of players out there that play solo, or maybe with a friend or two.
What is a clan?
A clan is a collection of players, mostly friends
or people who have played together a lot. By uniting under a common clan they can share gaming experiences, team up and organise
events between themselves.
How do you join a clan?
Well this depends very much on the clan
you are interested in joining. Some clans are a very private and close group of friends, not interested in expanding. Some
are large communities that are willing to take players under their wings to extend the reach and influence of the clan, some
are skill based and only interested in gathering as many top players as they can, while others are just happy to have friendly
committed players. The best way to join a clan is to get playing with some of it's members on a regular basis, they then may
ask you or be willing to propose you as a member if you ask. But make sure you find out a bit about the clan first to see
if you are likely to fit in. If you don't then consider other clans.
If you approach a clan to join and they don't want
you, don't be disheartented, it's probably for the best as you may well have not fitted in. Like life, everyone is different
and we all hang out with different friends, you will fit in somewhere. Consider (or even ask) why the clan doesn't want you
as a member.
What do you get for joining a clan?
Well, something yet nothing!
While it's possible, I don't think many clans give their member anything like badges or tea-shirts or caps etc. though there
usually is a clan identity that membership bestows on a player. What you do get as a clan member is access to far more in
gaming than playing independently can give you. The following is a list of benefits and extras that most clan members get
just for being part of a clan.
Training: Most clans will help less skilled players
Friends:
You automatically have a new group of players that are available
Events:
Tournaments, ladders
Rivalry: Being part of a clan makes you more aware
of other clans
Community: Both within your own clan and amongst other clans
Pooled identity: The clan tag affects how people perceive you in addition
to your own behaviour.
Most importantly: Being in a clan takes you to a new level of on-line gaming.
You become part of a stronger community, on-line play takes on more meaning, and by participating in a clan you also contribute
more to a gaming community than you ever would as an individual player
Can I make a new clan?
Yes. There is nothing official about a clan.
All you need to make a clan is a few people who agree to be part of it. However the reality is somewhat different. For a clan
to be successful and have any longevity there are certain things it needs to keep it going. However, there is no reason why
you can't start off a clan between just you and a friend.
What do I need to do to make
a clan?IdentityOkay, this is easy, just pick a name and decide on how you will use
that name or initials of it in your online name. Just a couple of guidelines, first, think carefully about how people will
perceive you as they will judge you first on your clan name. Second, do some searches for your new clan name to see if there
is already a clan of that name. You may be able to get away with it if there is another clan but it is in a different gaming
genre. You will be suprised how many clans there are across the different games.
Communication
First and foremost you need communication. If the members
in a clan can not regularly interact and talk then it is very likely that the clan will drift apart with disinterest. Most
clans have forums of their own, usually a mixture of private and public forums to allow other players from different clans
to interact with them while being able to have private dialogue. There are many free forums that you can get and set up with
little effort, though many of these include advertising banners to subsidise this. Some clans pay for the forum service so
that they have better control over it.
A home
Successful clans all have a website, their home on the Internet.
This website is run for the benefit of it's members and sometime contains information about the clan to other visitors. Links
to games, patches, articles and other areas of interest to a clan's members are common. Most clan sites also list their members
with a little information about them.
Leadership and ownership
Running a clan takes a lot more effort than you
may think. Whose clan is it anyway? Presumably if you want to set up a clan then you want to be the leader, or at least one
of a few founding members in the clan that decides how it is run. Pretty much all clans have a leader or leaders.
Webmaster
Running a website can take a lot of work, some clans have a
very scant site, but the more effort that is put into the website, the more likely it is that the clan will be successful.
You will need somebody with technical and design skills. You need to find a company to host the site and administer access
to it. you need somebody that will configure and maintain the forums. Some clans have their own email and domain name which
needs configuring.
So What Are You Saying?
Go and join or form a clan.
Don't ask
yourself why you should be part of a clan. Ask yourself "Why shouldn't I be in a clan?" I think you will find it hard to come
up with a reason.
